Leyland shakes up Detroit's lineup for Game 4

DETROIT (AP) — Jim Leyland had finally seen enough.

The Detroit manager shook up his lineup before Game 4 of the AL championship series Wednesday, dropping slumping outfielder Austin Jackson from the leadoff spot to eighth in the order. Other hitters essentially moved up a spot, with Torii Hunter leading off and Miguel Cabrera hitting second.

The Tigers trailed the Boston Red Sox 2-1 in the series. Detroit won the opener 1-0, but the bullpen collapsed in a 6-5 loss in Game 2 and Boston prevailed 1-0 in Game 3.

"We scored one run and no runs in two of the games," Leyland said. "We're going to take a shot. If nothing else, when guys look at the lineup card they kind of look at it a little bit. And maybe it wakes you up a little bit. Not that they've been sleeping, they've been great games. Just a little something to, you know, churn up the butter a little bit."

Jackson was 3 for 33 with 18 strikeouts in this year's postseason. Only twice in his career, including postseason, had he started a game hitting anywhere other than leadoff, according to STATS.

"I think I'm actually doing Austin Jackson a favor," Leyland said. "He's getting kicked around pretty good right now. I think it's easy to kick people when they're down. I'm not taking him out of the lineup, so I am sticking with him."

Hunter was in the starting lineup as a leadoff hitter for the first time since July 4, 1999, when he played for the Minnesota Twins. The last time Cabrera started a game hitting second was June 28, 2004, when he played for the Florida Marlins.

One person unaffected by the changes? Shortstop Jose Iglesias, who was set to bat ninth, as expected.

"I agree with all you people and I think you agree with me on this one — we had to do something," Leyland said. "It's a little bit of a shocker, but, hey, you know, postseason, let's try something. I'm not afraid to try something."

Leyland was asked if he worried his team would think he was panicking.

"I can't cover everything," he said. "You guys wanted me to change something, and now you want to find the flaw in something we changed. I did what I thought was the right thing to do, and I really wanted to give you guys something to write about and talk about. This should be a good time for you.

"You can say I'm nuts, you can say I'm dumb, you can say whatever you want. It does give you something to write about, other than, 'Jackson struck out 18 times, Leyland needs to do something.' So here it is, have a good time with it. We'll see how it plays out — and I will be willing to answer the questions after the game."

Gartner: 'Back-to-school' PC sales don't make the grade | Business ...

Following up IDC's third quarter report on Wednesday, Gartner followed up with its own assessment of the PC industry. The numbers lined up for the most part, but Gartner painted a darker picture.

Gartner research found that worldwide PC shipments totaled 80.5 million units in the third quarter of 2013, concurring an approximate 8.6 percent decline from the same time last year.

According to the tech research firm, Q3 marks the "sixth consecutive quarter of declining worldwide shipments.

Mikako Kitagawa, a principal analyst at Gartner, also highlighted in the report that the "back-to-school" quarter hit its lowest point since 2008.

Why is this happening now? One could easily point to the cannibalization of PCs at the hands of mobile devices, based on Kitagawa's assessment.

Consumers' shift from PCs to tablets for daily content consumption continued to decrease the installed base of PCs both in mature as well as in emerging markets. A greater availability of inexpensive Android tablets attracted first-time consumers in emerging markets, and as supplementary devices in mature markets.

Most of the other market share allotments on both the global and US playing fields were on par with what the IDC found -- except for two major sticking points.

The first would be Apple in the US market. According to the IDC, the Mac maker was the only one of the top five vendors to lose market share during the third quarter on an annual basis, down approximately 11.2 percent.

But Gartner implies the decrease was minimal, only dropping by 2.3 percent annually.

Secondly, while the IDC report found the Asia/Pacific PC market as particularly worrying, analysts posited that "commercial buying in China was better than expected."

Gartner's depiction of the Chinese PC market was not as positive -- at least in regards to local brand Lenovo, reflecting that "weakness in the Chinese market continued to affect Lenovo's overall growth."

Instead, Gartner shined a spotlight on the second place vendor worldwide, HP, noting its market share growth exceeded the average across all regions except in Latin America with its first positive shipment growth since the first quarter of 2012.

If you experience allergies from pollen, watch the time. The morning hours between 5 and 10 o’clock are typically the time when airborne pollen is at its worst, so you’ll want to stay indoors if you possibly can. If you have to go out, do not do too much and make it fast.

TIP! Keep yourself hydrated if you want to alleviate bronchial allergy symptoms. If you’re deprived of fluids, your mucous membranes can become inflamed or dry.

Help keep allergens at bay by not opening windows. When windows are opened up, pollen is allowed to get inside the house and can exacerbate allergies. Prevent allergy symptoms by cleaning filters that are in your air conditioner and vents.

If your allergy symptoms are always the same, you are better off treating them instead of attempting to prevent allergic reactions. Ways to accomplish this are to carry drops if your eyes are always dry, or wear a nose strip to bed every night if evening congestion is a problem. By the same token, if you have a sore throat, keep some throat lozenges with you.

Limit the amount of carpet and rugs in your home. They naturally attract dust and pollen. If you prefer to decorate with rugs, be certain that they can be washed, and do so regularly to rid them of allergens.

TIP! A good tip for avoiding allergens is to avoid any product that contains colorant. Even something as basic as toilet paper could be a problem if you use a brand that has dyes in it.

Panthers WR Steve Smith calls umpire 'garbage'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is still upset with the officiating in Carolina's 22-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, calling a member of Sunday's crew "garbage."

The 34-year-old Smith took aim Monday at umpire Dan Ferrell, saying Ferrell was "the sorriest referee I've ever met."

Smith added that Ferrell "received a check that day and I hope he feels good, because he was terrible."

Smith acknowledged his comments would likely draw a fine from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, but added that he doesn't care.

Smith said, "To be honest, I make enough money where if Roger were to fine me, he can."

Ferrell is a veteran official. He has been refereeing NFL games since 2003 and Sunday was the 156th career game he's officiated, according to Pro Football Reference.

Smith wasn't thinking about Ferrell's credentials on Monday.

The receiver was upset over several calls, including one where he was flagged for offensive pass interference and another where he felt Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson grabbed the back of his jersey on a route and used that momentum to "slingshot" past him to break up a pass.

Smith said Ferrell explained to him it wasn't enough to warrant a pass interference penalty.

"It was pass interference in Mexico, Europe, rugby ? in pretty much every other sport but in Arizona" on Sunday, Smith said. "But then when I pushed off it was pass interference."

Smith also pointed to a play where he dove with the ball outstretched beyond the first down marker but was ruled down before the yardstick. Panthers coach Ron Rivera challenged the play and officials overruled the call and granted Carolina a first down.

It was an aggravating day all around for Smith.

He dropped two passes from Cam Newton, including one in the end zone that should have been a touchdown. He was limited to 60 yards on four catches.

Despite his comments about the officiating, Smith took blame for the loss, saying, "I wasn't focused in."

Barnet murder: homicide investigation launched after body of pensioner discovered in north London home

The body of the woman, believed to be 69-years-old, was found at an address in Aitken Road, Barnet, in the early hours of this morning after officers forced their way into the property.

Scotland Yard said next-of-kin were aware and a post-mortem examination would be scheduled.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and has been taken into custody at a north London police station, police said.

A Scotland Yard statement said: "Enquiries continue, led by detectives from the homicide and major crime command.

"At this early stage, officers are not seeking any further suspects in connection with the incident."

Money the root cause of McIlroy?s break-up with Horizon Sports Management

This is no John Grisham legal thriller but, given the characters and players involved, it could be every bit as gripping. Rather than being a crowd pleaser on the golf course, Rory McIlroy?s issuing of legal proceedings against his former agent, Horizon Sports Management, may cast him into the central role of a courtroom drama in the High Court in Dublin at some point in the future that will focus on contract minutiae rather than on the number of birdies or bogeys accumulated in a round.

The root cause of the break-up fundamentally comes down to money, it would seem. Although it is unclear what the exact terms of his contract were, according to some media reports McIlroy?s decision to leave Horizon was based on the size of the agency?s commission on certain earnings which were put at up to 20 per cent.

The norm
However, a number of different industry sources have confirmed that such commission on sponsorship deals would be the norm.

An industry source observed: ?I don?t know what the percentage is, if it was 20 per cent, that would be the industry standard, not just for golfers but for other sportsmen. It?s the norm for the industry, not the exception.?

This source also dismissed the notion in recent media reports that such a cut belonged to a throwback of the ?60s, when Mark McCormack founded IMG and became the industry?s trendsetter. ?That notion represents a personal view, it implies people don?t get 20 per cent any more. They do.?

The source ? who is involved in helping clients in the entertainment as well as the sporting world ? also expressed the view that Horizon were ?victims of their own success? in achieving one of the most financially lucrative sponsorship contracts in sporting history.

McIlroy, who joined Horizon Sports in October 2011 after moving from International Sports Management, performed spectacularly after joining the boutique Dublin-based sports agency.

Within a week of the move to new management pastures, he won the Shanghai Masters and a month later won the Hong Kong Open; and, then, in 2012, he won six times ? including claiming a second Major, in winning the US PGA at Kiawah Island ? in a year that saw him attain number one in the official world rankings and top the money lists on both the PGA European Tour and the PGA Tour in the United States.

Much focus
This season, in contrast, has proven to be a barren one on the tournament circuit for the 24-year-old Northern Irishman with no victories and as much focus on his off-course activities as on the state of his game.

Dating former tennis world number one Caroline Wozniacki providing the paparazzi with numerous photo opportunities and McIlroy recently confirmed the split from Horizon in setting up his own management company, Rory McIlroy Incorporated (RMI) .

His decision to go it alone on the management front has come after he ealier this year signed a multi-year contract with Nike worth an estimated ?185 million.

Three top Microsoft shareholders say company founder Bill Gates should step down as board chairman.

Three of the top 20 investors in Microsoft Corp. are lobbying the board to press for Bill Gates to step down as chairman of the software company he co-founded 38 years ago, according to people familiar with the matter.?

While Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has been under pressure for years to improve the company's performance and share price, this appears to be the first time that major shareholders are taking aim at Gates, who remains one of the most respected and influential figures in technology.?

A representative for Microsoft declined to comment Tuesday.?

There is no indication that Microsoft's board would heed the wishes of the three investors, who collectively hold more than 5 percent of the company's stock, according to the sources. They requested the identity of the investors be kept anonymous because the discussions are private.?

Gates owns about 4.5 percent of the $277 billion company and is its largest individual shareholder.?

The three investors are concerned that Gates' presence on the board effectively blocks the adoption of new strategies and would limit the power of a new chief executive to make substantial changes. In particular, they point to Gates' role on the special committee searching for Ballmer's successor.?

They are also worried that Gates ? who spends most of his time on his philanthropic foundation ? wields power out of proportion to his declining shareholding.?

Gates, who owned 49 percent of Microsoft before it went public in 1986, sells about 80 million Microsoft shares a year under a pre-set plan, which, if continued, would leave him with no financial stake in the company by 2018.?

Gates lowered his profile at Microsoft after he handed the CEO role to Ballmer in 2000, giving up his day-to-day work there in 2008 to focus on the $38 billion Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.?

In August, Ballmer said he would retire within 12 months, amid pressure from activist fund manager ValueAct Capital Management.?

Microsoft is now looking for a new CEO, though its board has said Ballmer's strategy will go forward. He has focused on making devices, such as the Surface tablet and Xbox gaming console, and turning key software into services provided over the Internet. Some investors say that a new chief should not be bound by that strategy.?

Microsoft is still one of the world's most valuable technology companies, making a net profit of $22 billion last fiscal year. But its core Windows computing operating system, and to a lesser extent the Office software suite, are under pressure from the decline in personal computers as smartphones and tablets grow more popular.?

Shares of Microsoft have been essentially static for a decade, and the company has lost ground to Apple Inc. and Google Inc. in the move toward mobile computing.?

One of the sources said Gates was one of the technology industry's greatest pioneers, but the investors felt he was more effective as chief executive than as chairman.?
